Two baseball enthusiasts and their stories
Paul is the chaos in the clubhouse and Mathias the German efficiency in the dugout. And somehow, between the two of us — we make sense of baseball in Europe
Paul Hughes
Paul fell in love with Baseball a few years back. He was stuck in a hotel in Baltimore recovering from Covid and baseball was the only thing on TV every night. Since then the Orioles have been his constant companions.
Although he felt a spark watching the MLB, for some time he didn't dare to dream about playing baseball himself, worried that at 40 years old his body might not be up to learning a new sport.
But then he came across the Mainz Athletics Baseball Club. Initially starting out on the softball field, it took only one season to build up the courage to switch to the big field one season later.
Since then he has played for the Mainz Athletics Verbandsliga Team together with Matthias, which is where they met.
Matthias Letsch
Matthias has been with the Mainz Athletics for 5 years. He as well started playing Softball on the smaller pitch. But when it wasn't enough of a workout for him he moved over to the other side of the Ballpark and became the catcher for the Mainz Athletics Verbandsliga Team.
He loves the numbers, the details and the research, and has developed a general love and curiosity for baseball.
Professionally he also works in broadcasting, so as it was close to home, he implemented and continues to manage the streaming output for the Bundesliga Games of Mainz Athletics on Youtube.
